ROLL CALL

The engagement, the church, the reception. One roll.

A Ghanaian wedding is rarely one event. There’s the traditional engagement with both families in kente, the white wedding in church, a reception that runs late, and often a thanksgiving service after. Roll Call gives every guest a disposable camera on their own phone, in Accra, Kumasi or anywhere else, and every photo develops together when it’s over.

Both families, both sides

Guests pick the bride’s family or the groom’s family when they join. The tally runs all day, and the gallery shows the wedding from both sides.

Priced in cedis

One price per event in round cedi amounts, not converted from dollars. Free for up to 10 guests, and never a subscription.

For family who couldn’t fly home

One gallery link for the relatives in London, Houston or Toronto. Keep it for a year, or forever, and download every photo at full size.

Engagement and white wedding: one roll or two?

Many couples hold the traditional engagement and the church wedding on different days, sometimes in the same weekend, sometimes weeks apart. Roll Call handles both ways.

  • One roll: make one event that stays open from the engagement to the end of the reception. Everything develops together when the camera closes.
  • Two rolls: make one event for the engagement, revealed the morning after, and another for the white wedding. Each gets its own QR code, its own gallery and its own link to share.

If the two days are close together, one roll is simpler: guests scan once and keep shooting. If they’re weeks apart, two rolls means nobody waits a month to see the engagement photos.

December weddings, and guests from abroad

December is when much of the diaspora comes home, and the wedding calendar fills up around Christmas. Guests flying in don’t need an app or a Ghanaian number. They need a connection to scan in, from venue Wi‑Fi, roaming or local data. After that, photos save on the phone and upload when it finds signal again.

That matters at a packed reception too. When a few hundred phones share one mast, uploads slow down. Nothing is lost and no shot is counted twice: the phone keeps trying until every photo is in.

Let the MC announce it

At a Ghanaian reception, the MC runs the room. Guests listen to them more than to any sign. Give your MC one short line to read early in the programme, after the couple’s entrance and before the meal:

“Everybody, look at the card on your table. Point your phone camera at the code, type your name, and you have 24 shots for the day. No retakes, no peeking. The photos develop tonight at midnight, and the couple sees them when you do.”

Change the number and the time to match your event. There are more versions, for the church and for the party, in our guide to what the MC should say.

Where the QR code goes

  • On every reception table. Table tents come ready to print with your names on them.
  • In the order of service at church, so the ceremony gets shot from the pews.
  • At the entrance, on the welcome sign, next to the guestbook.
  • At the engagement, by the canopy or wherever guests are seated, since there are often no tables.

One QR code works for every guest at every part of the day. Share the same link in the family WhatsApp group for anyone who missed the cards.

HOW IT WORKS

Step by step, from setup to the reveal.

  1. ▸01 Create the event. Name, date, when the camera opens and closes, how many guests, and 10, 15, 24, 36 shots each. About two minutes. Up to 10 guests is free; bigger events are one payment.
  2. ▸02 Print the signs, or share the link. You get a QR code straight away, plus table tents and a welcome sign to print at home. The same code works for every guest, and the link works in a WhatsApp group.
  3. ▸03 Guests scan and join. They point their phone camera at the code, type their name and pick a side, Bride or Groom. The camera opens in the browser: no app, no account.
  4. ▸04 Everyone shoots their roll. A fixed number of shots, no previews, no retakes. If the signal drops, photos wait on the phone and upload when it comes back.
  5. ▸05 Watch it fill up. Your live view shows shots landing as undeveloped negatives, and who has a camera. If every camera is taken, add more and the queue gets straight in.
  6. ▸06 Everything develops at once. At the time you chose, every roll appears in one gallery. Hide or delete anything, share the link, and download every photo at full size in one ZIP.

Questions

How much does it cost for a Ghanaian wedding?

A 150-guest wedding with 24 shots each, kept private for a year, is GH₵1,160. For 300 guests it’s GH₵1,760, and for 500 guests GH₵2,560. One payment for the event. Hosts in Nigeria pay in naira by card. Paying in cedis by mobile money is on its way: until then, hosts in Ghana pay by card in dollars. Everyone else pays by card in dollars, pounds or euros.

Will it work at an outdoor engagement with poor signal?

Yes. Guests need a connection once, to scan in. After that, photos save on the phone and upload themselves when the signal comes back, even hours later.

Can older relatives use it?

If they can take a photo on their phone, they can use Roll Call: scan the code, type a name, shoot. There’s nothing to install and no password. For anyone without a smartphone, the grandchildren at the same table usually end up shooting for them.

Can we keep the photos private?

Yes. A private gallery can only be opened by the guests who shot at the event and the people you invite by email. Nobody else can see it, even with the link.

Do guests need to download an app?

No. Guests scan the QR code on the table and the camera opens in their phone’s browser. They type their name and start shooting. No app store, no account, no password. It works on iPhone and Android.

How much does Roll Call cost?

Small events are free: up to 10 guests with 10 shots each. Bigger events are a one-off payment per event, never a subscription, priced by how many guests, how many shots each, how long the gallery is kept and whether it’s private. A 150-guest wedding with 24 shots each, kept private for a year, is $75.50, or GH₵1,160 in Ghana and ₦57,000 in Nigeria. We price in GHS, NGN, USD, EUR, GBP, KES and ZAR.

When do the photos appear?

At the reveal time you pick: midnight, the next morning, or whenever you say so. Until then every photo stays sealed, like film waiting to be developed. Nobody sees a thing, not even the host. Then the whole night appears at once in one shared gallery.

Why limit how many photos each guest can take?

It’s what makes a disposable camera fun. With a fixed roll and no previews, guests stop scrolling through retakes and shoot the moments that matter. You choose the roll: 10, 15, 24 or 36 shots each.

Load the film. We'll see you at the reveal.
